Meet the Counselors!

Meet the Counselors!

The Hitchcock Center camp counselors arrived yesterday for staff training week. We have been having fun learning the ropes of Hitchcock camp and planning a great summer full of learning, games and making new friends. I am super excited about the folks we have on board. Here is a sneak preview of our counselors!

Abbe

Abbe is a western Massachusetts native and has recently finished a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies. She plans to pursue a Master’s degree in sustainable farming. She is a veteran Girl Scout camp counselor and her interests include looking at moss on rocks, crawling around in caves getting alarmingly muddy and climbing to high-up places.

Leigh

Leigh moved to Amherst one year ago from Charleston, SC, but actually grew up in northern California. She is currently an elementary school teacher in Springfield. Some of her favorite hobbies include art and tennis. Leigh loves hiking and is looking forward to learning more about the natural history of Massachusetts with the Hitchcock campers. She especially enjoys teaching and learning about animals and their habitats.

Patrick

A native of South Hadley, Patrick graduated from Unity College in Maine with a bachelor’s degree in captive wildlife care and education. After interning and Southwick’s Zoo and the Smithsonian Zoological Park, Patrick worked as a field teacher at the W. Alton Jones environmental center in Rhode Island. He enjoys hiking (barefoot whenever possible) and canoeing, and is enthusiastic about all wildlife, but especially snakes.

Rebecca

Rebecca has been living and breathing the outdoors since before she could walk. She has a deep love of nature and has spent the past seven years brining and teaching people to enjoy its wonders. Rebecca started teaching whitewater kayaking at the age of 16 and progressed into river and watershed management work. She worked in Alaska as a river ranger, cleaning up and protechting public lands in 2010-2011. She graduated magna cum laude from Mount Holyoke College in critical social thought in 2011 and now studies herbalism and holistic health.
